Your Hips Don’t Lie When you Learn to Belly Dance

If you’re like most women, seeing Shakira’s Super Bowl LIV performance might make you want to learn how to shimmie. We have good news! You can learn this and more in Misako Beats belly dance class. Our upbeat introductory belly dance class teaches all the fundamentals of belly dance. This dance style encourages you to let your hair down and learn moves which are sexy, core toning, fun and free spirited (and make your hips look that much more like Shakira’s!).

Why Belly Dance?

Women have been fascinated by the mysticism that surrounds belly dancing for ages. Belly dancing can be especially empowering to women because it gives them comfort in their own skin. Misako Beats instructor Mrs. Bettye Ames was recently featured in a belly dancing article for Howard Magazine. Ms Bettye explains, “The shimmies, hip kicks and undulations teach you to control your body and get in shape — plus, it gives you confidence." Women of all shapes and sizes come together to learn a dance that is mostly focused on hip, belly, and butt movements, giving women the opportunity to embrace their unique form with confidence.

Ms Bettye comments in the feature that women take classes for a variety of reasons, but most importantly they do it to boost their body confidence and self-esteem overall. She reflects that some women “want to show their husbands a special dance for his birthday….But most want to do it for themselves, which is the best reason.

Shakira’s performance at the Super Bowl combined her latin Salsa moves with belly dance from her Lebanese heritage, making for an exciting and very sexy number. It gave us all the opportunity to see skill, sexiness and sass, when these movements are done by a true professional.

Our belly dance class at Misako Beats dance studio caters to beginners but those who have taken belly dancing before can come to brush up on their skills as well.

What can I expect?

This is a class for belly dance beginners. All movements and combinations are broken down to their basic components and explained. The majority of the class focuses on basic technique and isolations to prepare the body for the specific movements that are integral to this style. Expect to learn a new technique in most classes, strengthen your core and have fun!

What to Wear?

Wear comfortable clothing that allows you to move, which showcases your hips so the instructor can see your movements easily. Hip belts and scarves are highly recommended if you have them.

Benefits?

We work on moving techniques during the class devoted to abs, legs, booties, backs and arms, so a tangible benefit is getting these areas more toned and strengthened. The body conditioning benefits of belly dance cannot be understated.
